Why You Need to Be a Legend In Your Own Mind

“You have to believe you’re a legend in your own mind.” – Trent Dilfer, Life Without Limits Podcast

Former NFL and Super Bowl Champion quarterback Trent Dilfer shared his story recently on a podcast. During the interview, he was asked how he handled the period of his career in Tampa where he was being openly booed in public by fans for the team’s poor performance. Dilfer laughed and replied that to be a winner in the league, you have to believe you’re a legend in your own mind.

He wasn’t making the case for blind arrogance, or an unwillingness to learn and get better, but instead, reinforcing the fact that you must be self-confident in order to be successful in life.

Believe you’re the best. Stay hungry to keep getting better.

In his/her own mind, a Competitor is the best. They believe they can achieve any goal, succeed in any job, and make an impact. In fact, this level of self-confidence is crucial to being successful.

The world will tell you that self-confidence comes from having the approval of other people. It’s why you see people trying to be someone they’re not. They’re jumping through hoops – physical, financial, spiritual – to win the approval of someone else, and therefore (in their mind) become more confident.

Unfortunately, the world is wrong.

Self-confidence isn’t fake bravado or being something you’re not. It’s believing in yourself, knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and being comfortable in your own skin.

Having this level of self-confidence impacts the way you see and interact with the world.

  • You’re more able to rise from failure and overcome it the next time around.
  • You’re more likely to reach higher in your career and with your goals, believing you have what it takes to grow into the person capable of achieving them.
  • You’re able to block out the noise – critics, negative self-talk, doubts, or fears – in order to focus on the task at hand and what you control, your actions.

It’s believing you can and you will, just need the time or opportunity. It’s believing you’re a legend in your own mind.
